Misconception among Pre-Service Teachers in Space Science Concepts

The article presents a study aimed (i) to investigate the level of understanding and misconception of space science concepts among pre service teachers, and (ii) to identify factors which influence the formation of space science knowledge among the pre service teachers of the Faculty of Education, UiTM. 140 students from diverse courses at bachelor degree level participated in the study. Students’ understanding of space science was assessed using the standardized Space Science Test. Test used is a multiple-choice test designed to assess students ‘conceptual understanding of the most basic concepts in Space science and does not require mathematical operations or calculations. Analysis was carried out through the use of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20 (SPSS 20). The findings indicated that the level of respondent’ understanding is moderate (37.86%) with a number of misconception of a basic astronomy concepts. There was no significant difference between male and female respondents (t=1.505, p= .135). The results also showed that there was no significant difference between science and non-science major (t=.855, p= .394). Education was found to be the most important factors which contributed towards the pre service teachers’ understanding of the space science concepts. This study sheds light into the crucial needs for space science-based courses in teacher training curriculum.
