Editorial Policies

Focus and Scope



Revista Publicando is a scientific space which aims to promote the work of teachers and professors from a transversal and multidisciplinary perspective. We attend to the needs and expectations of that sector in its various forms and manifestations.

The journal is aimed at researchers, teachers, and the public interested in understanding the educational phenomenon.

We believe in science created from the public, of free access, and contemporary approach. However, the educational sector in all its aspects is facing new challenges today. To reflect this, we give space to all interested parties who want to disseminate their research and professional work in two significant areas of incidence. On the one hand, cultural and social studies; and on the other, the field of technology, information science, and data science. Although the former explains itself, the latter encompasses all those processes that involve the interaction of communities and individuals with information. Nevertheless, the concept of information has also become a notion that cannot be alienated from its relationship with the creation and processing of data or with the technological tools associated with these processes. Education in the 21st century, we believe, looks to the past and the future, to tradition and innovation, to culture in its daily structure and to technology and information that call us to the unknown.

The journal directs particular attention to both the process and the guidelines that must be met to publish in an indexed journal. Because it is a publication available on the Web, it is accessible throughout the world following the license of Open Access established for this kind of journals.

The journal intends to become a means of production and distribution of knowledge generated by researchers, teachers, professors, and the public in general from Ecuador, Latin America and the Global South.

 

Section Policies

Editorial

This is a general section for notes related to editorial policy, the scope of a specific issue, or on aspects deemed relevant for the development of the journal. We will also publish letters to the Editor with scientific character and referred to previously published articles. If it is considered appropriate, contributions will be made concerning scientific events or news from the world of science. The editorial board will decide the themes and forms of publication.

Articles

These may be the results of theoretical or empirical research. These disclose the progress or results, general or partial, of an original investigation. The author should detail the methodology, methods, and/or tools used. The objectives must be clearly defined and express correspondence with the conclusions.

According to the description formulated by Colciencias (2008), authors can submit the following types of articles for publication:

a) Scientific and technological research article.

Presents the original results of completed research projects. The structure of the article must have the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • Methodology
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusions
  • Bibliography

b) Reflection article

A document that presents research results completed from an analytical, interpretative, or critical perspective of the author, on a specific topic, using original sources.

c) Review article

Document result of finished research where the results of published or unpublished research are analyzed, systematized, and integrated on a field in science or technology, to account for the advances and development trends.

d) Short article

A short document that presents preliminary or partial original results of scientific or technological research, which usually require early dissemination. The structure of the article must have the following four sections: introduction, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusions.

e) Case report

A document that presents the results of a study on a particular situation to make known the technical and methodological experiences considered in a specific case. It includes a systematic review of the literature on similar cases. 

f) Review of the topic

A document resulting from the critical evaluation of the literature on a particular topic.

g) Document of reflection not derived from research.

These types of documents are known in the academic field as essays. In general, they are writings that, through an identifiable structure, clearly expose a topic, develop some implications, and present conclusions. In the case of Revista Publicando, we have adopted a different methodology in this case. We have decided to separate the Essay in a distinct section for the typological and stylistic differences.

The articles will follow the general rules of style and form defined in the Authors Guidelines section.

Revista Publicando follows the 6th Edition of the APA Manual.

Essay

The essay is a literary genre in which the writer expresses his personal beliefs, combining imbricated scientific knowledge and artistic creativity. It is based on the investigative and academic exercises that are presented in written form briefly exposing the writer's thoughts regarding a specific area of knowledge.

This type of publication shares with science, one of its essential purposes, which is to explore more thoroughly and qualitatively a reality, to approach the truth which alludes, either to a person, object, event or particular phenomenon or social circumstance.

It stands out for a pure speech, but with a high linguistic level according to the type of reader to whom it is addressed.

It includes the work of a meta-analysis and critical evaluation of research or previous processes, the literature on some area of study of human sciences, education, social communication, and educational informatics.

It is almost always written in the first person since it highlights the qualitatively valuable experience of the subject who experiences reality.

This type of work should, preferably, offer the state of knowledge of the said object of study. Or, it should allow the identification of relationships, contradictions or inconsistencies and propose solutions for further studies.

Structure

It does not have a pre-established scheme because it depends on the rationality of the author. However, the text must be characterized by coherence and internal cohesion, based on a reflective discourse considering the bibliographic background of the subject. That is, it consists in investigating the knowledge generated by other researchers.

The Journal accepts contributions from teachers and researchers who wish to present the results of books that have been edited or are in the process of publication.

Peer Review Process

The review or evaluation plays a fundamental role in academic publication. Peer review helps validate research, establish a method by which it can be evaluated, and increase the chances of developing contacts within research communities.

Publicando uses the double-blind peer review method.

All items will be processed as follows:

  • Once the author uploads the article, the chief editor will submit it to a general review to verify that it meets the minimum conditions necessary to be processed.
  • The chief editor will assign a section editor to give continuity to the process.
  • The articles that are sent for review must appear without the name of the author, title, company, or institution from which it is taken. This is the start of the blind peer review process that allows the impartiality and objectivity of the entire publication process.
  • The reviewers will be chosen from the database of the journal itself, and when necessary, external experts can be contacted for that process. They will receive a review form so they can be guided in the evaluation process. In both cases, the reviewers would always obtain a certificate confirming their participation as reviewers with Revista Publicando.
  • Once the task is finished, the reviewers must issue a decision within the following categories: Accept; Accept with revisions or Decline.
  • The section editor will receive the verdicts of both reviewers, and if necessary, may seek the opinion of a third reviewer.
  • The section editor will be responsible for sending the author the final decision on their collaboration, detailing the reasons why the decision was made.
  • If the article is accepted with amendments, authors will receive the suggestions that reviewers made to the article.
  • If the author accepts the suggestions, he must return the corrected article within the period that was assigned. The new version of the author is compared with the original, and it is edited.
  • The review process usually takes between four and eight weeks.

 

Publication Frequency

Revista Publicando has a quarterly frequency and is published at the beginning of each period (January, April, July, October).

Special Issues can be included in each quarter, or the separation in Fascicles according to the sections established for the journal.

The possibility of sending contributions is open, in any period.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides open access to its content, based on the principle that offering the public free access to research helps a better global exchange of knowledge.

We have a Creative Commons License 4.0 of Recognition-NoComercial-ShareAlike 4.0. International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

The journal only conserves the rights of the first publication of the works, as much of the printed version as the digital ones.

The Journal does not assume any responsibility for the criteria that may be established in categorization processes, promotions, or admission to universities, or to state or private institutions. By maintaining an Open Access policy to its contents, the journal will not provide the Authors with any additional information for this purpose.

 

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...

LOCKSS stores and distributes the content of our journal  in collaborating libraries through a page of the LOCKSS editorial manifesto. In addition, we use different national and international repositories where the publication is hosted, such as Dialnet and REDIB.

 

Roles descriptions

Chief Editor

  • Review, supervise, and approve the content of each issue of the journal before its publication.
  • To ensure the editorial line and the policy of the journal, as well as to be attentive to its regular updating.
  • Direct and coordinate the activities corresponding to the editorial committee, section editors, copyeditors, designers, layout designers, and authors.
  • Direct and ensure the academic quality of the journal.
  • Determine if the articles can be sent to the section editors for their corresponding edition.
  • Decide if the received papers can be sent to the referees for their evaluation or they should be rejected.
  • Develop all appropriate actions for the magazine to appear in the most prominent databases and indexes.
  • Represent the journal in meetings called by national or international authorities, organizations, institutions, and others.
  • Designate a commission before any demand or incident that occurs related to ethical aspects of the works published or sent to Revista Publicando, as well as the performance, scope, and objectives of the journal.
  • Conduct all the editorial management and keep updated the digital platform that is used for that purpose. By platform, we understand the group of sites and channels that are used for this purpose: Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, blogs, among others.
  • Create promotion strategies for the journal, its authors, and issues published.

   

Section Editors (Executive Body)

  • To help the Chief Editor when, for justified reasons, he cannot fulfill any of his functions.
  • Advise the Editorial Board in scientific and research matters.
  • Decide together with the Chief Editor if the received papers can be sent to the referees for their evaluation or should be rejected.
  • The section editor tracks the progress of the submission and helps in any difficulty that may arise.
  • Once the review is completed, the editor ensures that the submission goes through the editing process.  For this purpose, the section editor will work with the articles and authors to obtain a quality result and according to the editorial policies.
  • In specific cases and previously agreed with the Chief Editor, the section editor substitutes the copyeditor and proofreader. The proofreader is responsible for editing the submissions to improve grammar and clarity, works with the authors to ensure that everything is correct, guarantees strict adherence to the bibliographic and textual style of the journal.
  • Monitor for compliance with the standards and scientific and ethical requirements of the publication.
  • Ensure in coordination with the Chief Editor for the thematic relevance and global rigor of what is published.
  • Help in search of articles, organization of issues, as well as other activities that help to encourage the scientific-social impact of the journal.
  • To chair over the commission that is created before any demand or incident that occurs related to ethical aspects of the works published or sent, as well as about the work of the journal.
  • Provide the Editor of the journal, in due time and form, with all the necessary information to evaluate the work of the arbitrators and propose to the Editorial Committee stimulus actions in correspondence with the results of their work and the interests of the publication.
  • Assign the works accepted in the first instance (by the Chief Editor) to the corresponding referees, according to the theme.
  • Maintain the appropriate correspondence with the authors who submit papers to the journal.
  • It is responsible, together with the Chief Editor, to develop all the appropriate actions for the journal to appear in the most prominent databases and indexes.

 

Editorial Board (Advisory Body)

  • Participate in the revision of the issues of the journal before its publication.
  • Assist the journal in the adoption of agreements and general policies. For this purpose, the section editors and/or the Chief Editor will send the necessary information to the members of the committee.
  • Propose authors and topics for new issues.
  • Perform reviews when requested.
  • Advise the executive team when requested.
  • Develop specific tasks demanded by the director or the Chief Editor.
  • Promote among the international scientific community the journal, its articles, and issues.
  • Suggest academic guidelines for the editorial policy of the journal.
  • Promote the dissemination of the journal in international academic media.
  • Support the selection of reviewers, as well as discuss the best options for reviewers if necessary.

  

Copyeditor/proofreader

  • The copyeditor/proofreader is responsible for editing the submissions to improve grammar and clarity.
  • Work with the authors to ensure that everything is correct.
  • He/She guarantees strict adherence to the bibliographic and textual style of the journal.
  • In some journals, it is the editor or section editor who has this role.

 

Anti Plagiarism Policy

By the open nature of the publications carried out in the Open Journal System (OJS), the Editorial Board continually monitors the possibility of plagiarism of the articles published on its pages.

The authors must ensure that the data and results presented are original and have not been copied, invented, distorted, or manipulated.

Plagiarism in all its forms, self-plagiarism, multiple or redundant publication, as well as the invention or manipulation of data,  constitute grave breaches of ethics and are considered scientific frauds.

The authors cannot send articles to our journal that are previously submitted to another one.

The authors cannot send items to our journal that at the same moment, are in review by another journal.

However, it is permissible to publish a work that expands another already appeared as a brief note, communication or summary in the minutes of a congress, provided that the text on which it is based is suitably cited and that the modifications suppose a substantial change of the already published.

Secondary publications are also acceptable if they are addressed to totally different readers; for example, if the work is published in different languages or if there is a version for specialists versus another for the general public. These circumstances must be specified, and the original publication cited appropriately.

Finally, Revista Publicando uses anti-plagiarism and similarity check software in its premium versions: Plagiarism Antichecker X PRO and Grammarly.

All articles are checked by these applications in the initial evaluation phase, and before being sent for review.

Ethical Statement

Introduction

Revista Publicando is a signatory of DORA (San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment) in which "a series of recommendations are made to improve how the quality of scientific production is evaluated."

We also make public our adherence to the standards and codes of ethics established by the Committee on Publication Ethics.

 

The journal is committed to scientific seriousness to collaborate in the elimination of bad practices in the research and publication of academic articles.

In this sense, the authors must ensure that the results declared in the text are entirely original. The plagiarism constitutes a severe ethical fault that will not be allowed. The Editorial Board must act if they suspect that there has been some misconduct or if they receive a report of misconduct. This obligation extends to both published and unpublished documents.

The Editorial Board will not be limited to rejecting documents that raise doubts about possible misconduct. It will do everything possible to first try to obtain a response from the suspects of wrongdoing and then clarify the situation with the parties involved or the institution they belong to start a more exhaustive investigation until a solution to the problem is found.

The Editor will be attentive to intellectual property problems and will work with the Editorial Board to resolve possible infringements of laws and conventions on intellectual property.

The Editor may withdraw papers that have problems of scientific misconduct, such as manipulation of primary or secondary sources, plagiarism, use of sources without due consent, or any other issue that may harm the ethical standards of the journal.

 

Procedure to sanction bad practices

Definition of “the most common bad practices” by Vázquez Moctezuma (2016):

  • Citing sources without having consulted them and omitting references that contradict the research itself.
  • Plagiarism, like the lack of academic honesty when a person intentionally copies the ideas, words, design, etc., of someone to present them as their own. And the self-plagiarism when the author does not cite his own previously published articles and takes fragments of those works.
  • The segmentation of research or salami science when the researcher reuses fragments of a previous investigation without making explicit references to the original publication.
  • The duplicate publication implies the use of total or partial results of an investigation where the authors also change the title, the summary, translate to another language, and add co-authors.
  • The manufacture and manipulation of data.
  • The undeserved authorship which consists of assigning an author without having made a substantial contribution
  • Conflicts of interest between the author and other subjects or entities, almost always involving funding entities, to conduct the investigation towards certain conclusions.

If someone considers that any malpractice has been committed in our journal, you should contact the chief editor.

After having been informed, or having known first hand that a bad practice or suspicious act has been committed, the Chief Editor will examine the fact in question.

A commission may be created by the Chief Editor to direct the necessary inquiries, investigation, and conclusions.

In some cases articles may be temporary retracted from the journal in order to proceed with the investigation without affecting third party interests.

The Chief Editor will proceed discreetly in gathering information before informing the person involved or directly involved in the event.

Actions will be taken to ensure that whoever reports the accusation is protected.

Actions will be taken to ensure that the accused is protected until his or her participation in the facts is demonstrated convincingly. Individuals accused of bad practices will be protected against false or anonymous accusations. The latter will only be considered if there is enough evidence to investigate the subject.

If the defendant's participation is proven, the article involved will be definitely removed from the journal. For these purposes, the editorial committee will deliver a letter explaining the verdict and the reasons that have led to Revista Publicando to withdraw the article.

 

Commitment of the authors

Originality and fidelity of the data: The authors assure that the work is original and unpublished. This does not contain parts of other authors or other fragments of works already published. Also, they confirm the veracity of the data, that is, that the empirical data have not been altered to verify hypotheses.

Multiple and/or repetitive publications: The author must not publish articles in which the same results are repeated in more than one scientific journal or any other non-academic publication. The simultaneous proposal of the same contribution to multiple scientific journals is considered an ethically incorrect and reprehensible practice.

Attributions, citations, and references: The author must always provide the correct indication of the sources and contributions mentioned in the article.

Authorship: The authors guarantee the inclusion of those persons who have made a significant scientific and intellectual contribution in the conceptualization and planning of the work, as well as in the interpretation of the results and in the writing of the results. At the same time, the order of appearance of the authors according to their level of responsibility and involvement has been hierarchized.

Access and retention: If the members of the Editorial Board consider it appropriate, the authors of the articles should also make available the sources or data on which the research is based, which may be kept for a reasonable period after publication and possibly made accessible.

Conflict of interests and disclosure: The authors must also indicate any funding of agencies and/or projects from which the research article arises.

Errors in published articles: When an author identifies a critical error or inaccuracy in his/her article, he/she must immediately inform the editors of the journal and provide all the necessary information to list the appropriate corrections. These corrections will be made in the form of amendments in the lower part of the same article (always in a note to the margin, so as not to alter the publication).

Responsibility: The responsibility of the content of the articles is exclusive of the authors. The authors also commit themselves to carry out a review of the most current and relevant scientific literature of the analyzed topic, keeping in mind the different currents of knowledge.

 

Commitment of the reviewers

Contribution to the editorial decision: Peer review is a procedure that helps publishers to make decisions about proposed articles and also allows the author to improve the quality of materials submitted for publication. The reviewers assume the commitment to carry out a critical, honest, constructive, and unbiased review of both the scientific quality and the literary quality of the writing in the field of their knowledge and skills.

Respect for review times: The reviewer who does not feel competent in the subject to review or who can not complete the evaluation in the scheduled time, should notify the editors immediately.

Confidentiality: Each assigned manuscript must be considered confidential. Therefore, these texts should not be discussed with other people without the express consent of the editors.

Objectivity: The peer review must be carried out objectively. The reviewers are obliged to give sufficient reasons for each of their assessments, always using the review template. Reviewers are required to warn publishers if substantial portions of the work have already been published or are under review for another publication.

Text visualization: The reviewers commit themselves to indicate with precision the bibliographical references of fundamental works possibly forgotten by the author. The reviewer should also inform the editors of any similarities or overlaps of the manuscript with other published works.

Anonymity: To ensure that the review process is as objective, impartial, and transparent as possible, the identity of the authors is deleted from the papers that are submitted for peer review. If for some reason, the identity of the authors, their institutional affiliations, or any other data that threaten the anonymity of the document has been compromised, the reviewer must immediately notify the editors.

 

Commitment of the editors

Publication decision: The editors will ensure the selection of the most qualified reviewers and specialists scientifically to issue a critical and expert assessment of the work, with the least possible bias.

Honesty: The editors evaluate the articles sent for publication based on the scientific merit of the contents, without discrimination of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, nationality, political opinion of the authors.

Confidentiality: The editors and the members of the working group undertake not to disclose information related to the articles sent to the publication to other persons than authors, reviewers, and editors. The editors and the Editorial Committee are committed to the confidentiality of manuscripts, their authors and reviewers so that anonymity preserves the intellectual integrity of the entire process.

Conflict of interests and disclosure: the publishers agree not to use in their research contents of the articles sent for publication without the written consent of the author.

Respect for the times: The editors are fully responsible for compliance with the time limits for reviews and the publication of accepted papers, to ensure rapid dissemination of their results.

The journal operates under the OAI-PMH protocol (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting), which allows the transfer of digital resources, mainly of a scientific nature and of free access. Publicando Journal is in the UIUC OAI registry.
